Brief: Our client had lived in this property for a number of years, but felt it was time for a revamp. As keen gardeners but with little time they wanted more flower beds, but not to overwhelm the space with flower beds. They wanted to retain a large lawn which they could walk around.
In the front garden they were overwhelmed with large hedges and shrubs, it was high maintenance and at the same time did not inspire or interest them. They wanted to create a garden which was really low maintenance that would complement a new driveway they were putting in with a very traditional oak car port.
The outcome: The front and the back had very different briefs but needed to be complementary as the front garden leads directly into the rear garden. This was helped with the shape of the beds in the rear garden and the way the gravel garden plants where laid our as well as the choice of plants. The rear garden had a very accessible path around the outskirts of the garden leading to two different seating areas to allow the client to catch the sun at different times of the day as well as appreciate the new garden borders from many different angles. The flowerbeds are wide enough to allow for a range of different shrubs and herbaceous plants to give seasonal interests while not be to large to overwhelm the client with maintenance.
In the front garden we created a beautiful, relaxed free flowing gravel garden, which welcomes you to the house as you pull into the driveway, with a mix of evergreen grasses, a few shrubs and herbaceous plants, there is real movement to this area, it is extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance while appealing to bees and butterflies. Gravel gardens really are a beautiful addition to a garden.
