Hadley Wood
Brief: A neglected extremely steeply sloped rear garden which needed to be managed. The client wanted to retain the slope but make it more of a feature. Our client wanted to marry a natural feel to the garden with a more formal terrace. There were a lot of structural, retaining walling needed, these needed to be soften and felt a part of the garden not a ‘necessity,’ Keen on entertaining the garden needed to be able to facilitate parties as well as have warmth when it was just the family. With large windows and door leading out on the garden, it is crucial the garden looks good year round.
The outcome: The hard slope needed to be retained but to make a feature of this lawn we created large sweeping steps resulting in the feel of an amphitheater. The terrace has year round colour with seasonal interest. There are a couple of small terrace platforms higher in the garden to create quiet spots surrounded by planting. We have planted a number of silver birch trees to the rear to great a more natural woodland feel to the rear of the garden. The soft pastel tones on the planting create a real sense of warmth to the large terrace.
